A loose unheated Sri Lanka sapphire of intense colour and good transparency. Oval mixed cut, weighing 1.49 carats, measuring 6.5 x 5.2 x 5.1 mm.
A nice example of a sapphire from Sri Lanka, the land of gems and an historic source of fine sapphires. From my images, shot in London daylight, as my usual manner, one can see a delightful distribution of the violet blue hue from vivid to intense. The pavilion (base of the gem) has been cut deep to retain and maximise the saturation of the colour as is common in local fashioning of sapphires. The gem is included with silk and crystals typically seen in Sri Lanka sapphires, none are visible to the unaided eye. There is a slight degree of surface abrasions to the facet edges consistent with normal wear.
